Why I love fossils

- This was alive and now it is stone.
- Nobody saw it happen but we can still tell.
- It was here before anybody was here.
You can love fossils in Waldo County.
What it really is
A fossil is the shape of something that lived, preserved in rock.
Three things to try today
- Press a shell or a leaf into clay.
- Take it out and look at the print.
- Explain how that is like a fossil and how it is not.

For the grown-up reading this
Waldo County is one of 16 counties in Maine. Somewhere in that number is a kid who lights up about fossils and has never met another one.
The clay print teaches mold versus cast, which is exactly how most fossils form.
If the kid who loves this is a girl
