Why I love fossils

- This was alive and now it is stone.
- Nobody saw it happen but we can still tell.
- It was here before anybody was here.
You can love fossils in Newton.
What it really is
A fossil is the shape of something that lived, preserved in rock.
Three things to try today
- Press a shell or a leaf into clay.
- Take it out and look at the print.
- Explain how that is like a fossil and how it is not.

For the grown-up reading this
Nobody has to talk a child into liking fossils. They have to not talk them out of it. Newton is one of the cities the Boston–Cambridge–Newton, MA-NH metro area is officially named after.
The clay print teaches mold versus cast, which is exactly how most fossils form.
If the kid who loves this is a girl
Read what one popular teacher said to one little girl who took out the classroom trash without being asked — and what that girl did with the rest of her life.
